Meet Dr. Mitchel

Mitchel began his studies in 2014 at ACATCM, where he was awarded a scholarship for academic excellence by the Calgary Chinese Herbal Society. In 2018, he furthered his training by observing at several leading acupuncture hospitals across China. Since then, he has specialized in Master Tung-style acupuncture and Dr. Tan’s Balance Method, integrating these advanced techniques into his clinical practice.

Mitchel is deeply passionate about treating pain and injury, utilizing a combination of acupuncture, manual therapy, and movement-based rehabilitation. In addition to musculoskeletal conditions, he has years of experience addressing mental health concerns, such as anxiety, stress, and insomnia, as well as internal medicine cases, including digestive disorders, hormonal imbalances, and chronic illness. His holistic approach blends Traditional Chinese Medicine with modern rehabilitation principles, helping patients achieve lasting results.

Beyond his clinical work, Mitchel is a co-owner and instructor at the Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy. With over 25 years of experience in martial arts and Ashtanga yoga, he is also a registered yoga teacher. His passion for teaching extends beyond the gym, as he regularly lectures at ACATCM, mentoring the next generation of practitioners. A strong advocate for mindfulness, he sits on the board of directors of the Marpa Gompa Meditation Society, contributing to the promotion of meditation and contemplative practices.

I believe Traditional Chinese Medicines greatest strength lies in its versatility and its ability to harness the incredible healing potential within us. It is an honour to practice this discipline and support my patients on their journey toward wellness

Colton Oswald is the co-President of the Alberta College of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (www.acatcm.com), where he has been teaching a variety of classes since 2001. He fully enjoys the combination of teaching and practice. Instructing and researching sharpen his clinical skills, while his experience as a clinician informs his teaching.

Colton got into Chinese medicine through the martial arts. His first martial arts teacher treated anyone who was hurt in class with acupuncture and Colton recalls being terrified of the needles. He obtained an undergraduate degree from the University of Calgary with a major in art history, but he credits Chinese medicine with “choosing him” rather than the other way around. He was always fascinated with Chinese culture, from tea to language and arts. “Chinese Medicine just seemed to come naturally to me,” Colton says, “that is probably why I stayed in it through the hard times starting out.”

Colton overcame his fear of needles by the time he graduated from the International College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Victoria, BC in 1999. Before starting his practice in 2000 he did a clinical internship at the World Health Organization’s International Acupuncture Training Centre in Nan Jing, China. He was drawn to Nan Jing as it was close to where “Dragon Well” tea grows and to his delight his arrival in the spring coincided with the harvest. During his internship in China, Colton saw the potential for the integration of Chinese Medicine into the mainstream healthcare system and was intrigued by the open-concept model of care he saw there.

Colton’s general practice includes a special interest in the areas of women’s health. He has considerable experience with pregnancy and fertility care and has taught these subjects for many years.

His passion for all facets of Chinese medicine keeps him studying and researching to improve his skills and knowledge. Outside of practicing and teaching, he enjoys spending time with his family, getting out into nature, gardening, and is a life-long practitioner of martial arts.
